Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a colorless, transparent liquid that is compatible with water and most organic solvents. Pure Dimethylformamide have a special odour, while industrial or spoiled Dimethylformamide have a fishy odor due to the presence of a dimethylamine impurity.
The name comes from the fact that it is a dimethyl substitute for formamide (the amide of formic acid) , and both methyl groups are on the N (nitrogen) atom.
